EORI Number
For businesses and individuals involved with customs operations in the customs territory of the European Union, it is obliged to have an EORI number. In this article you will learn the meaning of EORI, benefits, how you can register for it and how you can check an EORI number.
What is an EORI number
EORI is an abbreviation of Economic Operators Registration and Identification. It is an EU wide registration and identification number for businesses involved with customs clearance in the customs territory of the European Union. The number is relevant for export, import and transit.
An EORI number is a unique identifier for economic operators and other individual persons. A business or individual in the European Union has to obtain an EORI number in order to be able to perform customs activities in the EU. Also economic operators outside the customs territory of the EU, e.g. businesses in the United States, need to register an EORI number in order to carry out customs activities in the EU. The number has to be communicated to customs authorities of involved EU member states.
The number consists of a country code (2 letters) of the issuing member state, followed by an identifier that is unique.
Benefits
Thanks to this number, customs in all EU countries can identify a trader. For businesses it offers also several advantages. An EORI number will expedite customs processes and make them easier for businesses, resulting in goods getting faster to their destination.
EORI number registration
Businesses and individuals can register for an EORI number as follows:
- Businesses and individuals within the EU have to register at the national customs authority of their member state.
- Businesses and individuals with no establishment in the customs territory of the European Union can register in the member state where they intend to perform their first customs operation.
- Third-party businesses with multiple establishment in the EU can register in any of the countries in which they have an establishment.
